What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge consists of a series of interconnected crowns that fill the gaps left by missing teeth. This fixed prosthetic treatment ensures seamless integration with your natural teeth, enhancing aesthetics and functionality.

Bridges can be crafted from various materials, such as ceramics, metals, and porcelain. This variety allows for a tailored approach that meets your specific needs, improving dental function and contributing to your overall oral health. Why Choose Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges offer a range of advantages:

  • They provide a natural-looking improvement to your smile.
  • Bridges address multiple missing teeth with one solution.
  • They enhance your ability to speak and chew effectively.
  • Dental bridges maintain facial structure and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting.
  • Fixed bridges offer greater comfort compared to removable alternatives.
  • They can stay in excellent condition for many years with proper care.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Bridges?

Ideal candidates for dental bridges have healthy or restorable teeth and sufficient bone structure in the gap area. Fortunately, dental bridges are effective for replacing one or multiple missing teeth.

However, you require preparation of the adjacent teeth and enamel reduction to ensure a proper fit for the new bridge.

Types of Dental Bridges We Offer

  • Conventional Bridges

Conventional bridges are a popular and versatile choice for both front and back teeth. They consist of crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap, which support artificial teeth filling the space called pontics. This type of bridge is known for its effectiveness and cost-efficiency.

  • Cantilever Bridges

Cantilever bridges are ideal when healthy teeth are present only on one side of the gap. These bridges are anchored by the adjacent teeth, with the pontic extending from a single end. They are less common and typically used for gaps in the back of the mouth where specific conditions apply.

  • Maryland Bonded Bridges

Maryland bonded bridges are designed for a single missing front tooth, offering a highly aesthetic solution. They adhere to the back of the adjacent teeth with minimal preparation. This type of bridge is known for its natural appearance and tooth conservation.

  • Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges use dental implants as the foundation instead of relying on natural teeth. This method provides a stable and long-lasting solution for replacing multiple missing teeth while preserving your remaining natural teeth. The implants ensure a durable and reliable support system for the bridge. Choosing the Right Dental Bridges for You

Eligibility Criteria for Dental Bridges

Selecting the appropriate dental bridge requires a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment planning by our experts. Key factors to consider include:

  • Durability: Assess the longevity of various bridge types to determine the best fit.
  • Gap Location and Size: The wider the gap, the more complex the treatment.
  • Medical Conditions and Allergies: These factors can affect material choices and overall treatment suitability.
  • Cost and Budget: Financial considerations play a significant role in selecting the appropriate bridge.
  • Material Preferences: Options range from ceramics and porcelain to lithium disilicate, zirconium, and metal alloys.
  • Aesthetic Goals: Your desired outcome will guide material and design decisions.
  • Condition of Remaining Teeth: The health of adjacent teeth is essential for successful bridge placement and determining additional procedures.

Dental bridge procedures typically involve several steps and appointments, requiring a commitment to achieve optimal results. Our customised treatment plans are designed to meet your specific needs for both functionality and effectiveness. Additionally, certain conditions or systemic diseases might limit options, such as implant-supported or cantilever bridges. Cost

The cost of your dental bridge treatment can vary depending on multiple factors:

  • Number of Missing Teeth: Replacing more teeth increases the overall cost.
  • Material Choices: Certain materials are more expensive than others, influencing the price.
  • Additional Procedures: The costs of your treatment may rise if you need preparatory work like dental posts, bone grafts, or root canals.
  • Condition of Remaining Teeth: The health of surrounding teeth can influence the overall cost.

While dental bridges can be a considerable investment, they provide a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution with long-lasting functionality and superior cosmetic outcomes for years to come.

Dental Bridge Procedure

  • Initial Evaluation: We begin with a comprehensive evaluation that includes X-rays, 3D imaging, and a full oral assessment. This helps us create a customised treatment plan and address any underlying dental issues before proceeding with the bridge.
  • Preparation and Fabrication: After completing any necessary preparatory work, we prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel under local anaesthesia. We then take detailed dental impressions and send them to our dental laboratory for custom bridge fabrication.
  • Temporary Bridge Placement: While we wait for your permanent bridge, we fit a temporary acrylic bridge using provisional cement. This provisional bridge allows us to evaluate its performance and make any needed adjustments.
  • Fitting and Cementing: When your final bridge is ready, we perform several fitting tests to ensure a perfect adaptation. Once confirmed, the bridge is securely cemented in place with specialised sealing cement.
  • Aftercare and home care: Your home care and oral hygiene are essential to ensure the longevity and performance of your bridge. You must keep good oral health, brushing and flossing while attending regular check-ups.

Is the procedure painful?

A mild anaesthetic is usually required to numb the surrounding area before treatment. Teeth may be extra sensitive initially after treatment, in which case using sensitive toothpaste may help. Your dentist will advise you on the best course of action.

How long does bridge treatment take?

Two appointments are generally required for the fitting of a dental bridge. In the first, the temporary bridge will be fitted and the surrounding teeth prepared. An impression will be made so that the bridge can be made in a laboratory. Once the permanent bridge has been made it can then be fitted in the second appointment. The bridge may not be permanently cemented at once and extra visits may be required so that the fit is correct, but generally they only take two visits.

Advantages of dental bridges

The bridges look natural in the mouth and fit in beautifully with the rest of the teeth. They also only require two visits to the dentist and so do not take up a lot of time. Another advantage is that they last for a long time if looked after well and their life span is between 5 and ten years. They improve a great deal of issues that missing teeth create such as appearance, bite function and speech.

Disadvantages of dental bridges

For a few weeks after treatment the teeth can be extra sensitive to hot and cold, but this should only be temporary. Teeth on either side of the gap need to be healthy so that they can be treated and prepared. There is also an increased risk of gum disease and oral infection if a high standard of oral hygiene is not maintained.
