What is tooth cleaning?
Dental cleaning is a procedure that involves removing tartar deposits that build up on the teeth and gums. This tartar is formed from bacterial plaque, a film that adheres to the teeth and hardens over time.
It is essential to remove tartar regularly, as it can cause periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. These diseases can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, tooth mobility and even tooth loss.
Keep in mind that by maintaining healthy teeth and other structures that make up the oral cavity, we help the proper performance of the functions of chewing, phonation and digestion of food.
Is it right for me?
In general, it is indicated for all patients who wish to maintain the health of their gums and teeth, preventing the establishment of tartar deposits that can trigger periodontal disease and serve as a reservoir for bacteria involved in the development of caries.
We can say that it is especially indicated for patients who already have tartar and periodontal disease in order to prevent the progression of the disease in the first place. As we have already mentioned, cleaning removes tartar deposits, which reduces inflammation, oedema and redness of the gums. In addition, by removing the presence of irritants, it will stop the characteristic bleeding of the gums when brushing.
Ideally, teeth should be cleaned once or twice a year, but this will also depend on how much tartar tends to build up and what your dental hygiene habits are like at home. Contact Westmount Tooth Cleaning Sedgefield at 01740 629006 or email us at enquiries@
Benefits
-It keeps the structures of the oral cavity healthy, which, as mentioned above, allows the correct performance of the functions of chewing, phonation and digestion of food.
-It prevents the onset of periodontal disease and/or prevents it from worsening if it is already present. It also eliminates the characteristic signs of this disease: bleeding when brushing, redness, oedema and inflammation of the gums.
-If the patient suffers from gingivitis, it prevents it from evolving into periodontitis, which is a more complex disease that also affects the bone that supports the teeth and can lead to tooth loss.
-It prevents the development of caries by eliminating tartar deposits that can serve as a reservoir for the bacteria involved in caries disease.
-By preventing the development of more complex health problems in the future, it avoids the need for further financial investment.
-It is a way to control some systemic diseases that are affected by the health of oral tissues, such as diabetes.
-It eliminates bad breath by removing dental tartar and plaque deposits.
-Allows deep cleaning of areas that are difficult for the toothbrush to reach.
-Removes enamel stains (caused by coffee or tobacco), giving whiter teeth.

Costs
The price of a dental cleaning can vary, but is usually around 100 euros. The final cost will depend on factors such as the complexity of the cleaning (related to the amount of tartar the patient has accumulated), the tools used and the time invested.
Process
First, the dentist will perform a thorough examination of the teeth, gums and the entire oral cavity in general, especially to locate tartar deposits and areas where the gums are inflamed or receded. A plaque staining solution can also be applied to visualise its location.
After the detailed examination, the dentist or dental hygienist will proceed to clean your teeth. They will use special tools, such as ultrasonic devices or hand instruments, to completely remove tartar and plaque that has built up on your teeth and gums. If there is tartar under the gum, a deeper cleaning will also be performed in that area.
Once the teeth have been cleaned, the dentist will polish them with a fluoride paste to make the surface of the teeth completely smooth.
In some more complex cases, the dentist will perform an additional technique of subgingival cleaning down to the root of the teeth known as scaling and root planing. This is performed under local anesthetic and also removes any diseased tissue in the periodontal pockets.
Please note that for the results of the dental cleaning to be maintained over time it is necessary that the patient performs basic dental care at home, these are:
– Toothbrushing for at least two minutes with a traditional or electric toothbrush, when getting up, before going to bed and ideally after every meal. It is recommended to use a toothpaste with fluoride and a soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging tooth enamel. It is also preferable to use a toothbrush with a small brush head to facilitate access to the posterior areas. When brushing, use light pressure and sweeping movements to remove food debris and plaque.
– Floss after every meal, or at least before bedtime, to remove food debris that is trapped between the teeth and out of reach of the toothbrush bristles.
This care can be complemented with the use of mouthwashes, preferably alcohol-free, to eliminate microorganisms that may have remained after brushing.
