But what if we told you there was a solution that could completely transform your experience? Sedation dentistry is the answer you’re looking for.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

This technique uses special medications or gases to help you feel calm and relaxed during treatment. These medications help to reduce your level of consciousness, which brings you into a state of deep calm and allows the dentist to work more comfortably and effectively, without pain or stress.

There are different types of sedation, each with its own characteristics. The type of sedation you choose will depend on several factors, such as your state of health, the procedure to be performed and your level of anxiety. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable option for you, always taking into account your preferences.

Sedation dentistry is a safe procedure when performed by a trained professional who will assess your health prior to any treatment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate. Also, it is important to know that not all dentists can perform sedation, only those who have received the necessary training will be able to offer you this service.

Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is one of the most commonly used, this gas is inhaled through a mask and gives you a feeling of relaxation and well-being. Best of all, its effects wear off quickly once the administration of the gas is stopped.

Who should consider Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for people who are very fearful or anxious about visiting the dentist. It is also an excellent option for children who are nervous or uncooperative during treatments (nitrous oxide is safe for children, but it is important to adjust the dose correctly). This technique also benefits patients  with:

-Decreased sensitivity to local anaesthesia: if anaesthesia does not work as well as it should, sedation may help them feel more comfortable.

-Special needs, either cognitive or physical.

-Sensitive gag reflex: If you vomit easily, sedation may reduce this discomfort.

-Fear of needles.

-Low pain threshold: If you are in a lot of pain, even with anaesthesia, sedation may complement the treatment.

-Difficulty lying still.

Dental sedation is useful in a wide variety of procedures, such as:

-Dental extractions, especially of wisdom teeth.

-Dental implant surgery.

-Bone grafting surgery: When it is necessary to strengthen the bone prior to treatment.

-Surgical periodontal treatments: such as periodontal flap surgery and gum grafting.

Benefits

Dental sedation not only benefits patients, but also enhances the dentist’s experience. By helping patients feel comfortable and relaxed, anxiety and fear are reduced, allowing the dentist to work more calmly and effectively.

In the case of children, sedation not only keeps them calm, but also prevents them from having traumatic experiences that may cause fear in the future, especially in more complex treatments such as surgery or root canals.

Because dentists can work more comfortably, smoothly and quickly, treatments can be carried out in fewer sessions, which is beneficial for both the patient and the dentist. Costs

The cost of dental sedation can vary depending on the type of sedation chosen and the length of treatment. Generally, sedation is charged by the hour, so the longer the procedure, the higher the cost.

For reference, you can consider these approximate prices: Nitrous oxide sedation, around £150 per hour. Oral sedation (with triazolam tablets), from £80 per hour. Intravenous sedation, from £350 per hour.

Process

Before your sedation treatment, your dentist will ask you not to eat or drink anything for at least 5 or 6 hours beforehand, this is important for the sedation to work safely and effectively. Each type of sedation has a different process and different effects and we explain them below:

Nitrous oxide: This is a gas that combined with oxygen is administered through a mask and gives the patient a feeling of tranquillity (that they are fully conscious), it is often known as laughing gas. Its effects wear off quickly, between 15 and 30 minutes after it is stopped. It should be noted that the patient can drive after having been under its effects.

Oral sedation: In oral sedation, the patient takes one triazolam tablet one hour before the operation and may feel drowsy but will remain conscious, but if a higher dose is administered and moderate sedation is achieved, the patient may fall asleep. Recovery may take up to 24 hours.

Intravenous conscious sedation: This is administered intravenously and has a faster effect. It is a moderate sedation that makes the patient feel very relaxed and semi-awake (probably will not remember any of the treatment). When this type of sedation is chosen, the patient must be assisted by someone they know to drive them home (under no circumstances may they drive) and they must rest for approximately 24 hours until the effects have completely worn off.
